Purpose of the MO-10 oil cooler

Role in the turbine lube system and when this frame size is chosen

The MO-10 is a medium shell-and-tube frame in the MO series for steam turbine and turbogenerator lube systems where stable heat removal is required at higher oil flow in the lubrication and control circuit. Oil passes through the shell side, cooling water through the tube bundle; outlet oil temperature is maintained within the set range regardless of season and unit load.

MO-10 is selected when calculated heat load and indicative oil flow (~400 l/min industry practice for MO-10) exceed MO-4 and MO-2.5 capability but do not yet require MO-20. This is typical for medium-power turbogenerator units with main and standby oil coolers in a block layout.

Undersized or oversized heat exchange surface directly affects bearing and oil life: overheating reduces oil-film capacity, unstable temperature worsens control performance. Final MO-10 selection is done only after calculation from your turbine data — unit type, flows, temperatures and cooling water type.

  • Medium MO frame for TGU and mid-power turbines
  • Single- or double-pass layout per lube system scheme
  • Tube materials L68, 08Kh18N10T or MNZh5-1 for water type

Indicative values for enquiry — exact figures from the questionnaire

The table below shows typical indicative values for MO-10. We do not publish fabricated datasheet numbers: operating parameters, mass and dimensions of a specific build are agreed after calculation and, if needed, survey of the existing unit on site.

Design and materials

Shell-and-tube oil/water layout and tube bundle material

MO-10 is a shell-and-tube unit: the shell carries turbine oil, the tube bundle carries cooling water. Heat transfers through the tube wall. Layout may be single- or double-pass on oil or water side depending on your system hydraulics and pressure drop limits.

Tube material matches cooling water aggressiveness. Fresh water — brass L68 and LAMsh (GOST R 51573-2000 tubes). Aggressive media — stainless 08Kh18N10T (GOST 9941-81, composition GOST 5632-2014). Seawater — copper-nickel MNZh5-1 (GOST 10092-2006).

Manufacturing follows industry TU (including TU 108-1454-87) and GOST 31842-2012 for shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Cooling water for steam turbine lube systems must meet GOST 20689-80 — typically fresh water not above 35 °C.

Operating principle

How oil and water flow in the MO-10 cooler

Hot oil from the turbine lube system enters the shell and flows over the outside of the tubes. Cooling water circulates inside the tubes. Heat transfers to water; cooled oil returns to the tank and is supplied to bearings and the control system.

Water and oil flow, number of passes and temperature profile are sized so that at rated turbine load outlet oil temperature stays within limits set by the turbine OEM or retrofit project. Use the calculator on this page for a preliminary estimate — our engineer then fixes the frame in the specification.

Compatibility with turbine units

Where MO-10 is used and how fit is confirmed

MO-10 serves as main or standby oil cooler in mid-power steam turbine and turbogenerator lube systems — including retrofits where a worn unit must be replaced without piping changes. Fit is confirmed by lube system passport data, not turbine nameplate alone: flow, temperatures, pressures, connection sizes.

Designations such as PT-60, K-300 appear in project docs as examples of unit classes that used MO-series coolers of matching frame size. We do not publish a universal “turbine model → MO-10” table without a datasheet: selection is from the questionnaire, drawing or survey of the existing cooler.

  • Turbogenerator units 4–25 MW (power class indicative)
  • Steam turbines with controlled extraction and backpressure
  • Lube system retrofit replacing obsolete oil cooler

Compatibility with a specific turbine unit (PT, K, R, etc.) is confirmed only from the datasheet, questionnaire or on-site survey.

No. The number in the MO series mark is not surface area in m². For MO-10 it relates to nominal oil flow class (indicative ~400 l/min in industry practice); exact surface and hydraulics are calculated for your turbine.

MO-10 is a medium frame with higher indicative oil flow and heat load. MO-2.5 and MO-4 suit less loaded circuits on small and mid-low power units. See the comparison table; final choice uses the calculator and questionnaire.

Yes. We build to your connection dimensions and nozzle locations. A datasheet of the current unit or a survey drawing is sufficient.

Fresh water — brass L68/LAMsh; aggressive media — 08Kh18N10T; seawater — MNZh5-1. Choice is fixed in the spec considering GOST 20689-80 and actual cooling water quality on site.

Standard build — 2–4 months after spec approval; block layout — 3–5 months. Quotation — 1–2 business days. Warranty — 24 months from commissioning.

GOST 9916-77 on turbine oil coolers is withdrawn; units are built per TU 108-1454-87 and GOST 31842-2012. Water requirements — GOST 20689-80 (typically ≤35 °C).
